Cathedrals and Centurions!

Date: 21st Jun 2015 @ 8:34pm

I love waving groups of pupils and staff off on the many visits School arranges to enrich the curriculum and pupil learning. I also love welcoming them back to hear about all their adventures. Here is a report from Mrs Hulse about the Y4 visit to Chester on Friday.

'Our day began with a guided tour of the beautiful Chester Cathedral where the children enjoyed handling Christian artefacts, learning about traditional events such as baptisms and weddings and a wealth of information about the origin of paintings, sculptures and the history of the chapels.  A collective 'wow' was heard as the sun streamed through the West Window, which is filled with vivid stained glass illustrations depicting the Holy Family and six famous Saints.

Staff members were proud to receive compliments about the politeness and exemplary behaviour of our children from overseas visitors (German and Spainish).

After lunch, we marched along the Roman walls, (behind a Centurion who looked suspiciously like Mrs Millar!), through the Roman gardens, examining the intricate mosaics on the way.  Next we moved onto the famous Amphitheatre where Ancient Romans had shared their news and experiences with the population.

On to the Grosvenor Museum where we visited the Newstead and Webster galleries full of authentic Roman helmets, armour, coins, weapons and clothing.  Our children were so excited as the examined objects that they had learned about in school.  They used their historical investigative skills and expertise with Roman numerals to complete a question and answer sheet all about the life and times of the Romans.

Staff at the museum also thanked us for bringing such polite and interested children to visit.'

A super, fun, hands on learning day – just the kind we love at Willow Wood!
