Willow's Blog - Week 2 - Spring Term

Date: 22nd Jan 2016 @ 8:30pm

Welcome to another busy week in Oak class.

This week we have been learning all about weight in maths. To start off we used balancing scales to find out which items around the classrooms were heavier or lighter than our snack milk. We found this really easy so moved on to weighing objects using cubes. We really enjoyed learning about kilograms and grams and loved playing with Miss Hughes different scales to weigh ourselves. We finished the week with a real treat - we made cakes! The children were set a challenge to work as independently as possible to read the recipes and weigh the ingredients themselves, they measured, poured, cracked, mixed and cooked with very little help from the grown ups and did such a good job (apart from the odd egg on the floor). We decorated the cakes when they were cool and ate them for snack and they were delicious, watch out Mary Berry! Dylan said "I didn't know kids could bake!" and Hannah Grace said "This is one of the most good days ever!"

For English we have been carrying on with Lost & Found. We got to the part in the story where the boy takes the penguin to the Lost & Found office but there are no penguins in the inventory. This led us to learn all about information books so that we can create our own inventory with penguins in them. We had fun with a sorting game where we were made the 'experts' of different animals and had to work as teams to collect the most information about them and then had a go at writing our own information texts.

We are all really excited for the FAST club to start next Tuesday, it's going to be such a fun and amazing place to spend time with the year one children and all their families! Don't forget it's not too late to sign up. Hopefully see you there!
