Year 6 Autumn Term 2018

Welcome back!

It is September; a wonderful year lies ahead and it is time for Cherry and Elm pupils to study hard and prove what they are capable of!

Within English, we will study one type of writing and one grammar and spelling rule per week in preparation for the SATs tests next May. We will study two key texts. Firstly, ‘Queen of the Falls’ by Chris Van Allsburg, which is about a 62-year-old woman named Annie Edson Taylor who goes over Niagara Falls in a wooden barrel, seeking fortune and fame.  The children will be covering diary and journalistic writing using this stimulus. Secondly, we will be reading, ‘The Watertower’ by Gary Crew, a book which follows the codes and conventions of a sub genre of science fiction, known as gothic science fiction. This text will generate lots of discussion leading to persuasive writing and writing from different viewpoints.

In Maths pupils will focus on expanding their knowledge and application of place value, number (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division) and fractions. Pupils will be guided and supported to understand the skills, which they will need when they face their SATs in May. There will be an arithmetic test and so, as well as becoming problem solvers, pupils must be very adept at using formal arithmetic such as long division.

In Science this term, we will be looking at Humans and other animals, studying systems such as the pulmonary system, the respiratory system and muscles, bones and the nervous system. We will also look at healthy eating.

Our topic this term is ‘Curious minds’ which will focus on STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) subjects. The children will be studying both the natural and man made wonders of the world. Watch this space!

In our Physical Education lessons, the children will be taught gymnastics and invasion games such as netball and hockey. They will also be swimming this term. Please can you ensure PE kits are in school every day.

ICT will be embedded throughout the curriculum so iPads will be used by the children regularly during the week to develop and enhance learning. Skills will be taught alongside different subjects.

In Religious Education we will be learning how marriage is celebrated throughout all the major faiths and what prayer and meditation is.

Our SEAL topic is New Beginnings; children will be taught how to deal with new starts and they will learn to work as a team and face their fears during our residential visit to Condover Hall.

Finally, following on from last year, the SATs tests will continue to be more challenging than previous years which have come before as they are based upon the new curriculum, so regular reading, learning of multiplication tables and completion of home study has NEVER been more important!

We will be covering some amazing topics throughout the year and we hope you’ll enjoy joining your children and us through the next stage of their learning journey.

Thank you for all your continued support,

Mrs Grigg, Mr Aspinall, Mrs Ditchfield and Ms Webster
