Year 6 Summer Term 2019

Welcome back! It is the Summer Term; a wonderful time lies ahead and it is time for Year 6 to prove what they are capable of!

You are aware of the upcoming SATs tests and how important they are. It will be very important for your child to study hard and go to bed early for the next few weeks. Please ensure they are in every day and we know you'll continue to support them with any revision homework they are given.

Our topic this term is entitled ‘Save Our Planet’. This exciting theme will weave together all the curriculum areas with a focus on conservation and looking after this amazing world we live in. Year 6 pupils will be focusing on the affects that palm oil is having on our world’s rainforest.

English will be incredibly exciting as the children will be reading ‘The Hobbit’ by JRR Tolkien, and will be mirroring the text by constructing their own lengthy and well-crafted quest stories! Some fantastic character and setting descriptions will be written within these. We will also use ‘The Wonderful Wizard of Oz’ novel by L. Frank Baum to tackle instructional writing and journalism.

In Mathematics, we will be continuing to build on their knowledge of number, particularly with regards to place-value, addition and subtraction, and multiplication and division. Children continue to be challenged to think mathematically, and apply their knowledge to problems and reasoning in contexts. This includes considering why an answer is correct or incorrect, and looking at patterns in number that they already know and applying it to a new situation. Your support with this at home will be incredibly important.

In Science, the children will be learning about light by carrying out investigations to understand how light travels and explaining why shadows have the same shape as the objects that cast them. The children will be planning different types of scientific enquiries to answer questions, including recognising and controlling variables where necessary.

During our Physical Education lessons in school, the children will be taught how to how to throw and catch and these skills will be applied in athletics, dodgeball and cricket.

In Religious Education the pupils will be studying Islam creating lots of discussion and class debates.

Our SEAL topic is Relationships where pupils will be taught how to show respect, resilience and how to be a responsible member of the community inside and outside of school. It is never an easy ride to success. We want our pupils to know that there will be lots of obstacles along the way, but we want to teach them the skills to overcome these and find success. After all, we know respectful relationships underpin everything we do at Willow Wood.

Finally, following on from last year, the SATs tests will continue to be more challenging than previous years which have come before as they are based upon the new curriculum, so regular reading, practise of times tables, learning of spellings and completion of home learning challenges has NEVER been more important!. We know you will support your child to perform the best they can.

We hope you’ll continue to enjoy joining your children and us on the next journey of their learning. If you have any issues or concerns, please don't hesitate to contact
