Tattenhall Day 3
Date: 26th Oct 2017 @ 5:14pm
Well, we've reached the end of our residential, and we will definitely sleep well tonight!
Today, we were very efficient as we got up, and had managed to strip all our beds and mostly pack our cases before breakfast! With similar hot and cold options on offer like yesterday, we were ready for another activity-filled morning.
Mr Shone, alongside Stella and Fran from the centre, helped transport us to an imaginary world. We were trapped in Asda, and we had to survive a 'Zombie Apocalypse'. We had managed to scavenge a very few rations from DW Sports or Argos, but we needed to work out how they would be helpful! We sorted the objects into what would be useful to build a shelter, start a fire and give us food or drink. Then, we went outside to learn some vital skills...
One group worked with Fran to put up hammocks and shelters. Here, we learnt how to do two different knots, one of which led into a 'dog-log' race! With good listening skills and teamwork, we created an effective way to keep us out of the rain and any dangerous creatures that may be lurking nearby.
The other group was led by Stella, and she showed us how we could very simply create some bread with the food objects we had managed to scavenge. With flour, sugar, collected and boiled 'rainwater', and of course the ransacked jam, we could effectively create a nutritious fill of bread. We made sparks using flint and steel, then managed to set a piece of cotton wool alight. If we were ever trapped in the future, we now know how we could keep ourselves warm and start a fire safely. Stella demonstrated this on a larger campfire using wood, and then showed us how willow branches are effective for cooking the dough. We peeled off parts of the end to make a point, and wrapped our dough around the spear to make a sort of toast. Luckily with the jam we had found, we had a delicious and tasty snack.
Stella said that if ever she was stuck anywhere in Winsford, she knows that the Year 5 children of Willow Wood would be able to help her survive with our new skills!
Unfortunately, our time at Tattenhall was coming to an end. We had a final scrumptious and filling lunch, again freshly-prepared on the premises. Together, we tidied up the centre, did a final check for lost property, and then loaded everything on to the coach. Soon after 2pm, we left to return to school.
We are exhausted. It's a good job we've got half term to recover and rest, ready for the next half term's learning. Thank you everyone, and sleep well! Phew!
