Science visit to The Academy
Date: 19th Mar 2015 @ 9:49pm
Last week, Maple class were excited to attend the Academy High School to enjoy a taster session in science. Upon arrival, we had a quick tour around the school by Mr Waring, said hello to some former Willow Wood pupils and then headed to a science lab upstairs. We met our fabulous teacher for the afternoon, who gave us each a pair of safety glasses to wear. Miss Turnbull was mean and said that I looked like Amy from Big Bang Theory in mine!
The lesson focus was to investigate the acidity or alkalinity of household products. These included things like: shampoo, distilled water, washing up liquid and liquid handwash. We tested 12 different products in total. The first thing we did was to use a pipette to place a few drops of the liquid into a sample dish, we then added a couple of drops of universal indicator and then we observed what colour the liquid turned. Anything which was red/orange/yellow was acid, anything green was neutral, and anything blue or purple was alkaline. We loved the colours they created.
As a treat at the end we did an experiment with a container, an elastic band and a rubber glove. Ask your child to tell you the rest!
