Democracy in Action

Date: 9th May 2015 @ 10:18am

We had a great opportunity this week to share democracy in action with our pupils. As school was being used as a polling station, staff took small groups of our pupils into the room to observe voting taking place. This was a great chance for learning promoting such questions as, ”Why do only old people vote?” from our children. Thanks to Jackie, the Presiding Officer, for welcoming our pupils in and explaining the democratic process in action.

Our pupils are also taking part in the WEP local democracy project where they are deciding on the best idea to improve the place they live. I think this learning is being truly embedded in school as when the School Council were discussing how to organize an end of term talent show, Lauri contributed , “Why don’t we use the tickets as a voting slip and everybody could put their choice in a ballot box!”

The best ideas often come from the children!
