Girls Football Festival, Friday 22nd January

Date: 22nd Jan 2016 @ 9:18pm

Wow, what an afternoon of football by 5 of our girls from year 4!  We went to represent the school in a year 3/4 girls' football festival with 9 other schools within the Vale Royal Partnership. We hadn't played as a team before, and so we felt nervous but excited before we went. All of the schools were split into two pools, and so we got to play four matches to see how well we finished within our group.

The results for our group games were: 3-0 (won), 0-1 (lost), 2-0 (won) and 1-0 (won). This meant that we were the runners-up in our group. We had to then play the winners of the other group, and we won that too! Unbelievably, we were through to the final, and we had to play against the only team we had lost against all day, our group's winners.

We had overcome so many feelings and worries on our way to the final: some of us didn't want to play; some of us weren't sure about going in goal; we were a bit nervous of the ball; we weren't sure of our positions and spaces; and most importantly we needed to remember to keep our hands away from the ball!  Fortunately, we had sorted out most of these, and were ready for the final to try our best knowing our opposition from earlier. We were proud of ourselves, excited, full of energy, and we had the background knowledge that the winner will represent Vale Royal next Friday at the Cheshire tournament.

Our final eight-minute game started, and this time Mrs Millar didn't have to referee!  Soon after kick-off, the opposition's star player ran forward and kicked a really strong shot passed Mia in goal, it was 1-0 to them. We didn't let our heads fall, we looked up and kept on attacking. We had some neat back-flicks from Rylee, some solid defending of balls from Caitlyn, some confident tackling (and frequent falling-over!) from Kate, and some steady captaining with runs forward by Ella. It was an exciting match, but with the last kick of the game Witton Church Walk scored a second goal.

We are so proud of ourselves, and really enjoyed the afternoon experience. Mrs Millar and Mrs Ridgeway had a fantastic afternoon watching our team grow in confidence and as players. The excitement in the car on the way home was amazing, and the girls have been a wonderful asset to our school. Well done!
