Mulberry's first week back

Date: 6th Sep 2017 @ 8:26pm

Hello, welcome to the new school year and to Mulberry's first blog.

Today, everyone managed to find their way to our new classroom looking smart, smiley and safe back from the Summer holidays. The first activitiy we did was a 'circle time' to find out some information about each other, passing our class mascot around to take it in turns. There were six categories: our favourite subject, our hobbies, our favourite food, our favourite thing about the Summer holidays, a good characteristic about ourselves and any dislikes. We found out lots of facts about each other; and then to finish our discussion we asked any questions that we had about Year 5.

Our next task was to create a 'recipe to make me'. We thought about the quantities we would need, some characteristics and qualities that we have, and then the instructions needed to create us! After a while, we were able to develop our ideas and use our imaginations creatively to write our recipes. We've then made them ready for disply, and have put them on our writing wall.

We've also discussed our class contract, suggested and allocated our classroom jobs, and chosen our first reading books to take home. Our library looks full, and we know which types of books are in which section. Later in the week, we are going to create a piece of work for our reading display, to inform people why we like reading, what our favourite books are and why, and also our favourite genre.

We will keep on adding to this blog as we go through the week, so make sure to keep checking back. Remember to add any comments below.

Thursday: Today we have had a go at a longer piece of writing. We have created a mysterious opening to a story about what was behind a creaking door. We have used our imaginations, and the character 'Ali' ended up in many places including gardens, a castle, haunted houses, on a ghost train and in the zoo! Mrs Millar is very impressed with so many children with neat handwriting smiley

We have also had our first Spanish lesson back with Sandra, and met our new music teachers, Mr Stevens and Miss Wilde. This afternoon, we also started thinking about our new topic, the Ancient Egyptians.

Friday: After our celebration assembly today (well done Alfie M and Ryley for your awards), we tried some place value questions in maths. This was to see how much we could remember, and to try some new challenges!

After break, we completed our reading activities, thinking about what we enjoy about reading and who our favourite authors are. Some of us have completed a book review too. We also started to share the story 'I was a Rat' by Philip Pullman, this term's author.

This afternoon, we put forward ideas as to why we would be a good school councillor, sports councillor or eco-warrior. Our speeches were clear, and the choice was hard. We voted our top two choices in each category, and on Monday we will find out the results. We have also built on our work from yesterday about Ancient Egypt.

Well done Mulberry, for a great first week as Year 5 children. Please keep it up!
