Willow's Blog - Week 2, Autumn Term 2

Date: 17th Nov 2015 @ 10:37pm

Miaow! Welcome to another busy week at Willow Wood!

This week we started reading a wonderful new book as part of our English lessons - Lost in the Toy Museum by David Lucas. It is a story about lots of old toys that live in a toy museum. Every night they are counted and checked for repair by one of the older toys, a cat called Bunting (he's not a patch on me mind you). One night, all of the toys in the museum have disappeared, leaving nothing but a note saying 'Find Us'. Bunting goes off on an exciting mission to find the missing toys. This story reminded us of something that happened to us recently!!! We are really enjoying the story and can't wait to see what happens next.

We made our predictions for where our very own toys have ended up this week by drawing our guesses and writing a sentence with them. We are really working on rehearsing a sentence we are trying to write, counting the words we need, sounding the words out and remembering capital letters and full stops. We learnt a bit of Kung Fu punctuation to help us remember capital letters (bow at the start) and full stops (punch the air and say HA).

In maths we have been learning to sort objects. We started with a basket of lots of different toys and two hoola hoops. Miss Hughes set us a challenge of grouping the toys into each hoop. First of all, we had a go at sorting them into big and small but we weren't happy with this as there wasn't an equal split. Then, we tried to sort the toys by hard and soft, but again, this didn't seem fair. We looked again at the toys and noticed a big difference - old and new! We had a big chat about what made something old! Some of us thought that a toy was old if we had seen it in reception! But this didn't seem right, so we thought again and decided that if our grown ups or our grandparents might have played with it when they were little it must be old and if it was something we had at home it was new! We went back to our groups and made our own 'Venn Diagrams'.

We really wow'ed Miss Hughes in science when we were talking about materials. We did a big mind map of all the things we already know about materials, including the names of lots of different ones like stone, plastic, glass etc. We matched all the different materials to the right labels and then worked in little groups to discuss the properties of this. Miss Hughes couldn't believe how much we knew!

Our Star of the Week this week was Caleb! He has been showing such focus and a great attitude! I went home with Liam this week. I've been watching him in phonics and he's been making fantastic progress and showing a 'can do' attitude. Well done boys!

I can't wait to see what learning we are going to be doing next week! We really are doing so well this half term yes
